From the Field to the Office and Back Again

Darren Rozenek, GISP

Engineering Technician III, PUB GIS Administrator

City of Akron, Public Utilities Bureau

The City of Akron, Public Utilities Bureau (APUB) has implemented a GIS/CMMS integration for managing its water and sewer infrastructure assets over the last few years. By positioning the GIS as the core asset manager APUB is able to leverage the knowledge of its field personnel through Condition Assessments, Field Inspections and Work Order Management. Using GIS procedures this knowledge is then distributed to all users within APUB through the CMMS, maps books and GIS viewers.

Fusible PVC Pipe: A Fully Restrained Method to Join PVC Pipe for Trenchless Use

Chet Allen

Regional Manager

Underground Solutions, Inc.

The application of thermoplastic butt-fusion techniques and technology to PVC piping has been used with increasing regularity in trenchless techniques. The technology has been installed via directional drilling, sliplining and pipe bursting. It has been used in projects for all forms of water and wastewater application, in sizes of 4 inch up to 36 inch diameters. This presentation will discuss the material properties and technology behind this joining method, and discuss the future of trenchless technology for PVC pipe.

   SESSION 3: New Installation
  2:30pm - 4:30pm

2:30pm Restrained-Joint PVC Pipe for Directional Drilling & Pipe Bursting

J.D. Stephenson

CertainTeed

Faced with myriad choices, it is often not clear what type of pipe is best suited for a particular trenchless application. This presentation will discuss the engineering considerations involved in selecting thermoplastic pipe for water and sewer projects, focusing on assembly considerations, structural and flow performance, pressure-handling capacity and compatibility with existing systems. It will include examples of how the “cartridge method” has been successfully utilized throughout the country, especially in congested areas where conventional approaches may be impractical.

Choosing the Right Chemical Grout for Your Application

Ed Paradis

de neef Construction Chemicals

Chemical grouts have been used to repair our nation’s infrastructure for over 40 years, as one the oldest repair system in the industry. There are various forms of chemical grouts some are more permanent than others; chemistry has improved some products and made others obsolete.  Like everything else in the repair industry, choosing the correct material for the application is critical for a successful completion. This seminar will discuss the correct material choice, equipment and applications to complete your project on time with permanent results.

9:30am

Identifying Manhole I/I Sources and Cost Effective Repair Methods

    Lee Haessig
    Cretex Specialty Products

Attendees will learn about the significance of manhole frame-chimney leakage, leakage sources and how to identify them. Costs associated with treating excess flows, maintenance and other potential problems will also be covered. A variety of repair methods will be discussed, including the most recent technologies to enter the industry. Industry standards covering design life, product performance and acceptance testing will be reviewed to help ensure a successful manhole rehabilitation project.

10:00am

Manhole Chimney I/I Reduction

Tiffany Imker

Sealing Systems Inc.

For years the federal government has sought definitive answers to the source and amount of infiltration and inflow in manholes of all types. The results are in and they show that infiltration occurs mainly in the chimney area of manholes and vaults. Additionally, infiltration, if unchecked, can lead to road failure, which exacerbates the repair cost. Chimney infiltration is easy to identify and correct. This presentation will look at infiltration identification, methods and products to use for correction and remediation.

10:30am TBD

   SESSION 6: Inspection/Data
  2:30pm - 4:30pm

2:30pm Case Studies for Free Swimming Leak Detection System
    Myron Shenkiryk
    Pure Technologies

A free-swimming, untethered acoustic leak detection device recently introduced has demonstrated its ability to successfully identify leaks in both water transmission pipelines and wastewater force mains. The device is inserted into a fully operational pipeline and can monitor many miles of pipeline during a single deployment. Because the device travels in the fluid column and passes directly adjacent to the leak, it clearly and distinctly identifies the noise signature created by the leak.

Temporary Diversion Systems:  Reliability Is Everything

Michael J. Delzinagaro

Godwin Pumps of America, Inc.

Temporary diversion systems are only as successful as their planning and coordination. Data collection is critical to sizing pumps appropriately and should include: line size, flow (peak and wet weather), suction manhole depth, discharge location, system run time and noise level. This presentations provides an overview of the terminology and data collection necessary before contacting a diversion pump company. Proper application of system knowledge can eliminate most major causes of failure or delay.
